'40 Films in 4 Days'
The Countdown is On to the Second Annual Women's International Film and Arts Festival
MIAMI, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In its second year, The Women's International Film & Arts Festival, (WIFF) sponsored by American Express and chaired by Emmy award-winning actress Ruby Dee kicks off on March 29 and runs through Sunday, April 1, 2007. Over the course of 4 days, a diverse selection of 40 films will be screened from over 12 countries including: Spain, Australia, England, Germany, New Zealand, South Korea and Mexico.
This year's festival offers film lovers an exciting weekend full of events that include big budget films, world cinema, innovative independent films, international documentaries, and short films celebrating the richness of the lives of women around the world. In addition to the screenings there will be workshops, panel discussions, symposia and parties held during the festival.
With women representing only 5% of filmmakers globally, WIFF -- a non- profit founded in 2005 by Yvonne McCormack-Lyons -- was created to bring women artists from all over the world together in South Florida to explore, share and dialogue about issues concerning women through the arts.
This year's festival will showcase a rich assortment of films that reflect the lives of women around the world. "We selected films which capture all aspects of women's lives whether it be sexuality, politics, spirituality, culture, race, identity and beauty," said Yvonne McCormack-Lyons, Executive Director of WIFF.
The festival spans a range of subjects and styles: from "As old as my Tongue," a documentary featuring a 105-year-old cultural icon from Zanzibar named Bi Kidude; to "Sex Slaves," a Canadian feature which tells the stories of women trapped in the global sex trafficking industry.
Screenings will be held throughout Miami, at The Lyric Theatre, Miami Beach Cinematheque, AMC Cocowalk in Coconut Grove and at the Byron Carlyle Theatre. Festival screening schedules and programming information will be announced on Tuesday, February 20 and tickets will go on sale for all events Friday, February 23.
