TreeVitalize to Get Boost From One of the Largest Corporate Volunteer Efforts in the Country

TreeVitalize to Get Boost From One of the Largest Corporate Volunteer Efforts in the Country

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell today applauded Comcast employees who are planning to volunteer to help plant trees at five locations in southeastern Pennsylvania on Saturday, Oct. 7, as Comcast Cares Day helps the TreeVitalize effort to restore tree cover in the region.

"We are thrilled to be able to marry the Comcast corporate volunteer effort, where employees work to make their hometowns better places to live, with TreeVitalize, which focuses on tree plantings as an investment in quality of life and community revitalization," Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Michael DiBerardinis said.

TreeVitalize, a partnership to restore tree cover in the five-county Philadelphia region, targets older cities, townships and boroughs where tree cover is below 25 percent.

The locations are:

Churchville, Bucks County - Churchville Nature Center, 501 Churchville Lane. Volunteers will plant trees; remove invasive plants; and assist with the restoration of trails, amphitheater, educational exhibits, park cleanup, staining and painting.

Media, Delaware County - Rose Tree Park, 1671 N. Providence Road. Volunteers will plant trees, mulch and clean up.

Norristown, Montgomery County - Elmwood Park Zoo, 1661 Harding Blvd. Volunteers will join employees from Plymouth Meeting to plant trees, mulch and clean up.

Philadelphia -- 4700 block of Fairmount Street. Volunteers will join the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Urban League of Philadelphia to plant trees, mulch and clean up.

West Chester, Chester County - Along Pocopson Creek at the intersection of Lenape-Unionville Road, Lenape Road and South Wawaset Road in Pocopson Township. Volunteers will be planting a buffer of trees along the creek.

DiBerardinis will participate in the TreeVitalize effort in Philadelphia, which kicks off with remarks at 8:30 a.m., Oct. 7.

"The TreeVitalize effort is successful because of the partnership between government, private and non-profit organizations and foundations, businesses and people who live and work in the community," DiBerardinis said. "We're always pleased to have as many volunteer hands as possible to help us put trees in the ground and thank Comcast for its support."

"Comcast knows the importance of improving the quality of life in communities where our customers and employees live and work," said Comcast Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brian L. Roberts. "We've seen that even a single volunteer can make a measurable difference in the life of an individual and a community, and we felt there was an opportunity to have an enormous impact by mobilizing thousands of people across the country. We're extremely proud of our employees who have generously given of their time and talents today and throughout the year to make their hometowns better places to live."

This is the sixth annual Comcast Cares Day of service, which is one of the largest, single-day, corporate volunteer efforts in the United States. Headquartered in Philadelphia, Comcast Cable is a division of Comcast Corp., a provider of cable, entertainment and communications products and services.

DCNR spearheads the TreeVitalize project with many public and private partners. The $8 million program is planning to plant 20,000 shade trees in neighborhoods and along 1,000 acres of stream buffers. It also is working to teach some 2,000 citizens about tree care and planting in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.
