Soundflavor DJ Puts You in Control of Your Music
New digital music software from Soundflavor helps users quickly build great playlists, find new music and rediscover the songs that they love
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Soundflavor, a leading digital music search and recommendation company, today announced the availability of the Soundflavor DJ(TM) digital music companion for iTunes(R). Soundflavor DJ is designed to address a growing market need -- helping digital music users quickly build great playlists, find new music based on their tastes and rediscover the songs that they already own but may have forgotten about.
Nearly half of all digital music users have more than 500 songs in their collection, and more than two thirds of digital music users feel they have a lot of great music that they forget to play, according to a nationwide consumer survey recently commissioned by Soundflavor and conducted by Insight Express.
"The digital music explosion has made it easy for everyone to buy nearly any song they want, which is great; now the problem is too much content -- we simply don't remember what we have in our music libraries anymore," said Steve Skrzyniarz, founder and CEO of Soundflavor. "Soundflavor DJ solves that problem -- just play a song or playlist, and it plays other songs from your library that are similar, including some that you may never have thought of on your own. It's a simple way to make great playlists that can easily be saved in iTunes or to an iPod for enjoyment anywhere."
Powered by the Soundflavor Music Recommendation Engine, Soundflavor DJ's song recommendations are based on more than six years of research during which Soundflavor analyzed hundreds of thousands of songs, spanning nearly every genre of music, recording hundreds of attributes for each. The result is extremely accurate recommendations that yield significant consumer and commercial benefits.
"Music recommendation technology can play a critical role in helping connect consumers with the music that they want to hear," said Mike McGuire, research vice president of Gartner. "As consumers continue to build digitized music libraries, they will be looking for tools -- integrated into existing programs they have or built into Web-based services -- that help them discover the latest 'new' music as well as mine nuggets from the past."
Soundflavor DJ was built in collaboration with Adaptive Path, the product design and user experience company behind Blogger, Flickr and BitTorrent.
"Everyone at Adaptive Path is a huge music fan, and we are excited to have worked with Soundflavor to build a new breed of useful, deeply personalized, consumer applications on top of their already impressive music recommendation technology," said Lane Becker, director of new ventures for Adaptive Path.
Putting Soundflavor DJ To Work For You
To get started, simply play a few songs in iTunes. These songs will immediately appear in the Soundflavor DJ PlayStream. Soundflavor DJ then takes over and begins showing the album artwork for upcoming songs to be played.
Adjusting the "Flavorizer" knob controls how often Soundflavor DJ makes song recommendations to enhance the playlist. The Flavorizer can be set to "Mild Flavor" to freshen up an existing playlist, or "Full Flavor" to give you a chance to kick back and let Soundflavor DJ take over.
Once every few songs, a recommendation is made for a song that is similar to other songs being played, but is not in your personal music collection. Clicking on this song lets you learn more about it, hear a sample clip, or purchase from iTunes or Amazon. Recommendations for concert tickets from relevant artists are also made within the PlayStream. It's a fun way to shop by sound.
Soundflavor DJ works as a companion to iTunes and is available for free to Windows XP users at www.soundflavor.com. A Mac version, as well as support for additional digital music software such as Windows Media Player, is planned.
