Walter Cronkite, Madeleine Albright, Andy Rooney, Ken Burns Among Attendees
NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- A dazzling line up of political, media, literary and history luminaries will participate in the inaugural International Conference on World War II, November 16-19, at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Featured speakers include former war correspondent and legendary CBS newsman Walter Cronkite; WWII bomber pilot and former senator George McGovern; war correspondents Andy Rooney and Richard C. Hottelet; James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers; filmmaker Ken Burns, who will preview his new WWII documentary; and former secretary of state Madeleine Albright, who will discuss the liberation of Eastern Europe and the Cold War.
The landmark event will be one of the most significant gatherings of historians, journalists, Medal of Honor recipients, and WWII veterans ever assembled since the end of the war in 1945, and tickets to attend the full conference or individual events are still available. The Conference was originally scheduled for October 2005, when Hurricane Katrina forced its delay.
"World War II was one of the most important, world-turning events in modern history," said the Museum's President and CEO, Dr. Gordon "Nick" Mueller. "The magnitude of this conference and the level of interest and participation it has generated from top to bottom speak volumes about the significance of World War II historically and politically. The 'War that Changed the World' continues to be a relevant and valuable source for lessons for addressing modern day issues."
Designed for a general audience, the Conference will look back on how World War II was fought, the way it was won, and what it means today. A key component of the Conference is Memory Hall, giving visitors the unique opportunity to hear personal accounts from the veterans themselves -- soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, nurses, Home Front workers, POWs, foreign resistance fighters, Native American code talkers, and others. There is no charge to attend Memory Hall, but pre-registration is required. In conjunction with the Conference, the Museum will open a new exhibition, "Beyond the Call of Duty: The Medal of Honor in WWII.
