Vanessa-Mae Nicholson, the Singapore-born electric violinist,
waltzes to the top of the list of young entertainers in The Sunday Times Rich
List 2006, published on Sunday, April 23. Nicholson is also a new entry to
the overall list of the 100 richest young people, her GBP32m fortune earning
her a ranking of 10= among those aged 30 or under.
Now aged 27 and living in Kensington, London, she has taken
the classical music world by storm with her ultramodern electric violin and
head-turning good looks. She took her bow as a child prodigy, playing with
the London Philharmonia aged 10. In 1995 Nicholson racked up 1.4m sales with
her first album, The Violin Player. Her album sales now clear 8m worldwide
and together with concert revenues, she is worth GBP32m, more than enough to
indulge her passion for skiing and to pay for the ski lodge she is building
in Val d'Isere in the French Alps.
In second place among the young entertainers is Kiera Chaplin,
the 23-year-old Belfast-born granddaughter of comic actor Charlie Chaplin and
great-granddaughter of the playwright Eugene O'Neill. Worth GBP30m, she has a
30% stake in Limelight Films, a Hollywood production company, but has made
plenty of money from acting and modelling. She is also president of the
company behind the website webforjetset.com, aimed at helping the super-rich
source the must-have helicopter and Ferrari, or finding a reliable bodyguard.
Third equal and each worth a cool GBP25m are the four members
of Coldplay, who seem destined to become a supergroup and mainstay of future
Rich Lists in the same way as The Rolling Stones and U2 are now part of the
furniture. Currently on a sell-out world tour, Coldplay's latest X&Y album
was the second fastest selling in history, shifting more than 460,000 copies
in the UK in the first week of its release.
The 18th annual Sunday Times Rich List - the definitive guide
to wealth in Britain and Ireland - is published in a special 104-page
supplement, which profiles the 1,000 richest people and families in the UK.
The list is based on identifiable wealth (land, property, other assets such
as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies),
and excludes bank accounts (to which the paper has no access). This year, it
takes a GBP60m fortune to make it into the top 1,000 in the Rich List, 20%
higher than last year's GBP50m qualifying mark.

The huge success of television's X Factor has inflated the
wealth of many on the music millionaires list. Simon Fuller, the former
manager of the Spice Girls, sees his wealth shoot up from GBP75m to GBP300m
in the past year. American Idol continues to pull the audiences in the US
where Fox TV has paid him GBP35m for the rights and he recently sold his 19
Entertainment company to CKX, earning GBP69m for his stake. Fuller, 45, is a
partner in the X Factor with Simon Cowell, the show's self-styled Mr Nasty
who is worth GBP60m. Cowell, 46, is also involved with American Idol and is
well on the way to fulfilling his ambition to be worth GBP100m "in a few
years". The talent-spotting series has boosted the profile of Sharon
Osbourne, another of the show's judges and wife of heavy rocker Ozzy. The
Osbournes are worth GBP100m this year.
The list of music millionaires is topped once again by Clive
Calder, the former record label boss behind acts such as Britney Spears and
'N Sync. Calder, valued at GBP1,300m, made the bulk of his money from selling
his Zomba label to BMG in 2002. He keeps Sir Paul McCartney, who for some
years topped the music millionaires list, in second place. McCartney's wealth
rose by GBP25m during the past year, fuelled by earnings from digital and
album sales and box office receipts which Billboard estimated at GBP48.5m in
2005, making him the fourth biggest grossing artist in the world last year.
Old rockers, like McCartney, dominate the music rankings. The
Rolling Stones (Sir Mick Jagger (GBP205m, 290=), Keith Richards (GBP180m,
327=), Charlie Watts (GBP85m, 680=) and Ronnie Wood (GBP70m, 817=) continue
to amass their fortunes. At a time when most men their age are looking
forward to a free bus pass, the foursome are engaged in another sell-out
world tour, A Bigger Bang, taking in cities from Rio to Shanghai.
Roger Ames, 56, is a new entry to the music millionaires list.
The EMI Records adviser is worth GBP160m, most of which he made when his
London Records label was taken over by Warner Music Group for GBP140m in
2004.

The magic of Harry Potter propels Joanne Rowling to the top of
the list of millionaires in film and television and Daniel Radcliffe, the
young actor who plays him in the films into the top 10 of the young
entertainers list at 8=. Aged 16, Radcliffe is also the youngest entrant in
the list of 100 richest young people, where he is ranked 33= with his GBP14m
fortune. Rowling, 40, is worth GBP520m off the back of six books and four
films, three of which are among the top 10 grossing films worldwide of all
time.
The rest of the film and television millionaires list is a
mixture of stars in front of camera and the movers and shakers behind the
scenes. Guy Ritchie and wife, Madonna, rank fourth with combined wealth just
shy of GBP250m. Ritchie, who most famously directed Lock, Stock and Two
Smoking Barrels, splits his time between the UK and Beverly Hills. The rise
in the couple's joint income is largely down to the success of Madonna's
latest album Confessions on a Dance Floor and the sale of her stake in
Maverick Records.
Others to make the list from in front of camera include
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas (GBP175m, 332=), Sir Anthony Hopkins
(GBP80m, 716=) and Anne Robinson (GBP60m, 944=) whose success as the Queen of
Mean in Britain and the US proves that when it comes to box office, nasty is
most certainly nice. Barbara Taylor Bradford (GBP145m, 398=) moves up the
list after revealing the full earnings from her 20 bestselling novels.

U2 sit on top of the Irish entertainers list, now worth
EUR690m (GBP469m). The band generated more income than any other in the world
last year, according to Billboard magazine. Digital and album sales, plus box
office receipts totalled more than EUR215m (GBP146m) last year alone. The
four band members, headed by lead singer Bono, split all income five ways
with an equal share going to manager, Paul McGuinness.
Michael Flatley has danced his way to a EUR551m (GBP375m)
fortune. He shot to fame at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, held in Dublin,
as the interval entertainment. His Riverdance, Lord of the Dance and the
latest Celtic Tiger shows have earned him at least EUR196m (GBP133m) to date
and we add another EUR147m (GBP100m) for the value of his brand. He has
substantial other investments and homes in Co Cork, London, France and
America with plans for another in Barbados. Born in Chicago, his first dance
lessons were from his grandmother Hannah Ryan, whom he believes watches over
him. Flatley keeps a front row seat empty at every show in tribute to her.
Bob Geldof is a new entry to the Irish entertainers' list in
fifth position with EUR51m (GBP35m). He spearheaded last year's Make Poverty
History campaign with Bono, having previously organised Live Aid in 1985.
Although best known now for his humanitarian work, Geldof, 54, first shot to
fame as the lead singer of The Boomtown Rats in the late 1970s. Shares have
soared in his Ten Alps television production company, and he has a EUR29m
(GBP20m) stake in the reality show maker, Castaway Productions.

The Queen, 80 today, ranks 192= in this year's Rich List with
GBP300m. Her wealth has risen GBP30m in the past year due in most part to the
recovery in the London stock market, which has boosted her investment
portfolio, and a sharp rise in land and property values.
The Sunday Times Rich List is compiled by Philip Beresford,
the leading authority on British wealth, and edited by Ian Coxon. Beresford,
who has a Phd in politics from Exeter University, edited Management Today
before taking up wealth tracking full-time.
