Earth Day Meets Internet-Protocol Television: COMTek to Undertake Biggest Ever 2-Way IPTV Broadcast to 16,000 Science Classrooms for Earth Day Network
The new "PowerTV" internet-protocol television (IPTV) network of Chantilly-based Communication Technologies, Inc. (COMTek) will be used on April 21, 2006 by the Earth Day Network to broadcast a two-way video/chat presentation on global warming to 16,000 science classrooms across the United States. This massive, interactive undertaking is believed to be single biggest simultaneous application of two-way IPTV technology ever attempted.
COMTek will hold a live, phone-based news conference (with full Q&A) at 1:30 p.m. ET on April 18, 2006 to preview the Earth Day Network/COMTek project.
News event speakers will be:
* Dr. Joseph Fergus, president and CEO, Communications Technologies, Inc.;
and
* Jeff Nesbit, vice president of communications, Earth Day Network.
A preview of portions of the COMTek IPTV broadcast on the PowerTV network will be available via advance arrangements through Ailis Aaron, (703) 276-3265, or aaaron@hastingsgroup.com. Full details on the two panels featuring global warming experts is available upon request.
IPTV can be live or pre-recorded and broadcast at any time, but with quality of the next generation High Definition Television. It is a two-way interactive broadcast whereas traditional Web "streaming" is a one-way flow. COMTek's PowerTV Network Services provide users with the full experience of television broadcasting coupled with the interactive capability of the World Wide Web and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). This will be a revolutionary new way to communicate. A user (viewer) experience can now be personalized for a one-on-one experience over the Internet.
Reflecting $11 million in development over a three-year period, COMTek PowerTV is distributed over the firm's private, hybrid, global IP network that integrates fiber, wireless, broadband-over-power-lines (BPL) and satellite distribution to power an edge-distributed, low-cost, flexible IPTV service capable of delivering quality, interactive viewing experiences to PowerTV clients and their customers. Dedicated access to its own robust network, 15 years of advanced IT and networking leadership, and the expertise of over 900 technical personnel provides COMTek PowerTV with significant competitive advantages in the IPTV arena.
