New York Giants Running Back Tiki Barber & Hip Hop Music to Address Childhood Obesity in The Bronx

Performers on behalf of St. Barnabas Hospital & the American
Dairy Association & Dairy Council.

WHAT: Tiki Barber will talk to students about healthy eating and
exercise, introduce the Groovy Pyramid Performers and
participate in stretching exercises with students. The Groovy
Pyramid performers (www.groovypyramid.com), a group of hip hop
musicians from California, will perform interactive rap songs
about the five food groups from the USDA Food Pyramid.

WHY: A 2003 report from the city's health department found that
almost half (43 percent) of the children in New York City's
public elementary schools are overweight to some extent, and a
quarter qualify as obese. The report also cautioned that
childhood obesity is associated with serious long-term health
consequences, including diabetes, heart disease, asthma,
depression, high blood pressure, and some cancers. In the
Bronx, the numbers for overweight adults were highest of all
the five boroughs showing as many as one in four adults in the
South Bronx are overweight. The Bronx also had the highest
prevalence of diabetes.

As the recipient of the American Dairy Association and Dairy
Council's "3-A-Day" nutrition education grant, St. Barnabas will
implement of series of intensive classroom nutrition lessons for
students at PS. 59. Tuesday's event will serve as the kickoff
to the nutrition education program at the school.
