Can You Shoot Your Age?
Can You Shoot Your Age?
CBS Is Searching Across the Nation to See Who Can Achieve Golf's Elusive Goal
THE VILLAGES, Fla., March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- It's one of the most difficult feats to accomplish in the game of golf.
Have you ever tried to shoot your age playing golf?
The PGA TOUR only began keeping track of this statistic beginning in 1986.
There haven't been many professionals or amateurs accomplish the feat ... but here's your chance to do so in The Villages Shoot Your Age Championship to be held the week of May 1-7 at The Villages in Florida.
Slammin' Sammy Snead was the first to shoot his age and Arnold Palmer and Gary Player have followed suit. Jack Nicklaus has a goal to shoot his age and one day Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh will be gunning for this accomplishment.
Fans across the nation will have the opportunity to shoot par golf -- their age -- and qualify to play in a field of 80 golfers including Arnold Palmer and Gary Player on national television ... a dream of a lifetime.
"A golfer has to have mixed feelings about shooting his or her age," said Arnold Palmer. It's an exciting day when and if it happens, but it also means that you have to be up in years before it can happen.
"I remember the day I first did it in a tournament -- on my 66th birthday in the Champions Tour event at Seattle in 1995 -- and it was touch and go right to the last putt. It's become easier and easier every year since then.
"I'm sure this new event will be well received and am happy that it is being played on the course I designed at The Villages."
Palmer shot his age for the first time in the final round of the GTE Northwest Classic at Seattle when he had a 66 on his 66th birthday on Sunday, Sept. 10, 1995. It was the first of many times "the King" has accomplished the feat.
"Obviously shooting your age really depends on both how old you are and how good you are," said Player, who has been playing for six decades. "I would say that a pro should be able to shoot his or her age in their mid 60's and an amateur in their early to mid 70's. If you're a "weekend hacker" you simply may never do it."
"The first time I broke my age in a professional tournament I was 64 and shot a 64 in the opening round of the BellSouth Senior Classic at Opryland. Since then, I've probably done it an estimated 25 times on tour."
"The Shoot Your Age Championship is a great concept for a tournament in that it will bring pros and amateurs alike together in a format that will be competitive, and also a lot of fun. I'm really looking forward to being a part of this event in May."
"This is a 2-hour network show that is all about human drama and dream fulfillment," said Robert Horowitz, President of Juma Entertainment LLC. "We created this concept to give 'average Joe's' the once in a lifetime chance to come to The Villages to play on network television with golfing legends. There is no regional qualifying or casting. You come to The Villages during Shoot Your Age week to qualify. If you are one of the lucky 34 who make it -- you play that Sunday on CBS."
Horowitz plans to expand Shoot Your Age internationally as well as utilize this first event as a platform for a national certification Shoot Your Age program for golfers.
It's the chance any golfer would dream of ... so pack up your clubs and head to The Villages in the heart of Florida for this once in a lifetime opportunity to earn one of the 34 qualifying spots in the final event to be televised on national television on CBS, Sunday, May 7th between 1 and 3 p.m.
It's an 18-hole finale and everyone will tee it up from the same tees. The golfer with the lowest 18-hole score under his age (par) wins. Once you surpass your age, you leave the course and you are out of the competition.
Practice rounds will be held beginning Monday, May 1 through Wednesday, May 3. The qualifying 18-hole event will take place on Thursday, May 4th at the Palmer Legends Course at The Villages. All you have to do is play par golf -- your age. There are no handicaps and everyone will hit from the same tees.
Entry fee for the event is $375 and golfers must enter by April 20, 2006 with a valid driver's license or passport.
