Telstra Completes Successful Winter Olympic Program Delivery for Seven Network Using Scientific Atlanta System

ATLANTA, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- An extensive digital transmission system deployed by Scientific Atlanta, a Cisco company, for Telstra provided support for Seven Network's recently concluded exclusive broadcast of 2006 Winter Olympic Games coverage to Australia. Telstra deployed multiple Scientific Atlanta(R) encoders, decoders, multiplexers, and network management and control technology to deliver five feeds over redundant DS-3, 45 Mbps fiber links connecting Torino, Italy and Melbourne, Australia.

"Telstra's past experience with the reliable performance and video quality of Scientific Atlanta systems enabled us to move forward rapidly with this critical entertainment infrastructure," said Darren Wilson, director of global customer service, Telstra Global Business. "A low delay mode capability in Scientific Atlanta's encoders enabled them to meet Seven Network's stringent requirements in support of two-way traffic for real-time interviews between athletes in Torino and interviewers in Melbourne."

"As the holder of exclusive rights for Winter Olympic Games broadcasts into Australia, we conducted extensive product evaluation tests with Telstra and Scientific Atlanta that demonstrated this system would protect this valuable content and provide the entertainment experience for our viewers that we wanted to deliver," said David Watts, network telecommunications manager, Seven Network.

"We've supported Telstra with MPEG technology for many years, providing key building blocks for its domestic Digital Video Network which serves Australia's broadcasters," said David Wheeler, managing director for Australia and New Zealand, Scientific Atlanta. "Great statistically multiplexed video performance and low-delay are good examples of the innovative, real-world transmission solutions we deliver for programmers, broadcasters, service providers and network operators around the world."
