UDM Marketing Professor & 2,000 High School Students Rate the 2006 Super Bowl Ads

UDM Marketing Professor & 2,000 High School Students Rate the 2006 Super Bowl Ads

-Monday, February 6 at noon-

DETROIT, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- "Water Cooler Mondays" have never been the same since Dr. Michael Bernacchi, a marketing professor at the University of Detroit Mercy, began hosting his annual "Super Bowl Ad Nauseam."

According to his newsletter Under the Mike-roscope, Super Bowl ads will cost $2.5 million for 30 seconds this year. That works out to be $83,333 per second or 62-1/2 times that of Super Bowl I where ads cost $40,000 for 30 seconds.

The Super Bowl is the most watched television event each year and he tells his students to forget what is happening on the field, the real game is the commercial breaks. He asserts, "Super Bowl ads are the biggest ad game in town each year. Many of us may watch the ads and fast-forward through the game."

Since 1985, the UDM professor has hosted his renowned "Super Bowl Ad Nauseam," a live discussion that analyzes Super Bowl ads. In conjunction with his lecture, he teaches a Promotion Management class at UDM, which studies the Super Bowl as well.

The marketing professor's yearly ad event has grown more popular each and every year. Over 60 Michigan high schools are expected to participate this year, including 120 students from Franklin High School in Livonia, 10 students from Rochester Adams High School and a busload of students will be joining his class from Capac Junior and Senior High School located in Northern Michigan. In addition, students from California, Illinois, Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina, and Washington schools will join in on the discussion live on the web.

Over 2,000 students will be participating online through the program's website with 150 students on hand for the live discussion at UDM. Ad Nauseam will take place on Monday, February 6, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. in the Albright Room located in the Life Science Building on the McNichols campus.

During the lecture, Bernacchi will discuss advertising and what students should look for while watching the spots again. Recently, he lectured at Rochester Adams High School and Lahser High School discussing the ever- expanding economic and social impact that the Super Bowl has on our culture.

Pizza and snacks will be donated by Pizza Papalis (of Southfield) to make the afternoon even more fun. Ad Nauseam is open to all UDM staff, faculty, and students and is also open to the general public.

"When the night is over," Bernacchi added, "there will be some winners and some big losers. We look forward to analyzing the spots the next day with high school students from across the country."
