What: The U.S. Postal Service will dedicate the 39-cent Hattie
McDaniel commemorative postage stamp at an official first-
day-of-issue ceremony in Beverly Hills. The Hattie McDaniel
stamp is the 29th in the acclaimed Black Heritage stamp
series.

Background: The Hattie McDaniel commemorative stamp highlights the
achievements of the actress, singer, and radio and television
performer who became the first African American to win an
Academy Award for her role in the 1939 film "Gone with the
Wind." The stamp features a 1941 photograph of McDaniel in
the dress she wore on Feb. 29, 1940, when she received the
Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. The new stamp is available
on January 25 only in the first-day-of-issue host city,
Beverly Hills, and nationwide on January 26.
The Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences is widely regarded as one of the world's
preeminent research and reference facilities for the study of
all aspects of motion pictures, as an art form and an
industry. The Hattie McDaniel Collection housed in the
Library includes photographs of Hattie and other family
members, as well as scripts and other documents. There are
also a large number of recordings from her radio program,
"Beulah."
