With more than a month left in this year's historic hurricane season, the American Red Cross continues to assist thousands of Gulf Coast and Florida residents in the midst of physical destruction and emotional despair. In the weeks since Hurricane Katrina made landfall, American Red Cross mental health professionals have logged more than 800-thousand mental health contacts. The recent hurricanes and subsequent tornadoes and flooding have created a highly stressful environment as disaster victims rebuild their lives and communities. Those affected by the storms often feel isolated and numb and can find it difficult to formulate a plan for the future. Immediately after a disaster, serious decisions must be made that may have long-term consequences. Red Cross mental health professionals help disaster victims develop coping skills that can have a significant impact on long-term emotional health.

Laser Eye Surgery Does Not Improve Major League Baseball Performance
There has been great public interest in LASIK eye surgery with many prominent sports figures advocating its benefits. Two university researchers studied the offensive performance of a dozen Major League hitters who had undergone these procedures. The study concluded that there was no offensive benefit to undergoing the refractive surgical procedure in these players. In addition, due to the well-established risks of these elective surgical procedures, the authors conclude that players may be best served by waiting until the end of their baseball career before performing the procedure. As the baseball season concludes with the World Series games, players at all levels may wish to reconsider their plans to undergo a refractive surgical procedure based on these findings.
