San Francisco Chronicle Publishing Sean Penn's Series on Iran

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The San Francisco Chronicle will publish a series of reports by actor and director Sean Penn written during his visit to Iran on the eve of its presidential election, according to Phil Bronstein, editor of The San Francisco Chronicle.

The five-part series, which will be published in The Chronicle between August 22 and August 26, marks the second occasion Penn has written for The Chronicle from the Middle East. In January 2004, the newspaper published Penn's two-part commentary on his second trip to Iraq, which contained his observations on how life had changed after the American invasion.

This five-part series on Iran is Penn's first-hand account on the country, including his observations on its culture and his interactions with politicians, students and demonstrators.

In announcing the start of the series, editor Bronstein said, "Sean brings a unique perspective and a diary-like sensibility to the situation in Iran. In his very successful career as an actor and director, he has developed a keen eye for detail and for character. These are the things that make a story compelling."

Bronstein added, "Sean's a Bay Area resident, and we're the Bay Area's source for news and information, both as a newspaper and online."

The series, along with additional material, will also run on SFGate.com, the online arm of The Chronicle.

The San Francisco Chronicle is the Bay Area's leading news and information source and has been connecting the region with its award winning journalism since its founding in 1865. Combined with its online partner, SFGate.com, The San Francisco Chronicle reaches 1.5 million Bay Area residents daily and 1.7 million on Sunday. The six time Pulitzer Prize-winning Chronicle is the nation's 10th largest daily newspaper and SFGate.com is the nation's fourth largest newspaper website with 5.3 million monthly unique visitors and over 64 million monthly page views.
