Steve Martin in His Hilarious Career-Making Starring Debut

Available With All-New Bonus Features and 5.1 Surround Sound on July 26, 2005 From Universal Studios Home Entertainment

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Steve Martin's slapstick landmark "The Jerk" returns to DVD with all-new bonus features and 5.1 surround sound on July 26th-the 26th anniversary of its theatrical release. This rags-to-riches-to-rags tale, named one of the American Film Institute's 100 Funniest Movies of All Time, stars comic genius Steve Martin ("Cheaper By the Dozen," "Bowfinger") as Navin Johnson, the dim-witted, white son of black sharecroppers who embarks on a riotous journey to the big city. Along the way, the loveable loser revolutionizes the eyewear industry, dodges an obsessive sniper and falls in love with department store counter girl played by Tony Award(R)-winning actress Bernadette Peters ("Annie Get Your Gun," "Slaves of New York"). A stellar supporting cast includes stand-up legend Jackie Mason as the gas station owner who gives Navin his first break -- and his first phone book -- and director Carl Reiner ("Slums of Beverly Hills," "Ocean's Twelve") as the man responsible for Navin's ultimate downfall.

"The Jerk" was a star-making role that transformed "Wild and Crazy Guy" Steve Martin from a banjo-playing, stand-up comedian to a bona fide box office star. Since the film's release 26 years ago, Martin has evolved into one of Hollywood's most beloved comic figures. He has over 30 film credits to his name as an actor, writer and producer, including the role of Inspector Jacques Clouseau in next year's remake of the comedy classic, "The Pink Panther." The July 26th release of the 26th Anniversary Edition of "The Jerk" is a must-have milestone, with its sheer originality, endlessly quotable script and unbridled zaniness. The DVD is priced at $19.98 SRP.

Bonus Features With a "Special Purpose"

"The Jerk: 26th Anniversary Edition" DVD contains all-new bonus features including:

Synopsis

That wild and crazy guy, Steve Martin, makes his film-starring debut in this wild and crazy comedy hit "The Jerk." Martin portrays Navin Johnson, adopted son of a poor black sharecropper family, whose crazy inventions lead him from rags to riches and right back to rags. Along the way, he's smitten with a lady motorcycle racer, survives a series of screwball attacks by a deranged killer, becomes a millionaire by inventing the "Opti-grab" handle for eyeglasses -- and shows why he's one of the hottest comic performers in America today.
