Fire Departments Nationwide to 'Stand Down' for Firefighter Safety

On June 21, thousands of fire departments across the United States will suspend all non-emergency activity and instead focus entirely on firefighter safety. The International Association of Fire Chiefs and 18 partnering fire service organizations are calling for this "stand down" for firefighter safety beginning Tuesday, June 21.

As of May first, 50 firefighters had died in the line of duty in the United States -- that is ten more than at that time last year. Since May first, that number has risen to 58. In addition, the National Fire Protection Association cites more than 78-thousand firefighter injuries annually. Firefighter injury and death rates have remained relatively constant over the past several years, despite monumental improvements in technology and equipment.

President's Job Approval Ratings Continue to Be Low

The Harris Poll says President Bush's job approval ratings remain negative this month as less than half of U-S adults have a positive rating towards him. Part of this continued pattern of low approval marks could be due to the fact that the war has become the most important issue for the government to address and the economy has also taken a jump in importance. The president's current job ratings are 45 percent positive, 55 percent negative, just slightly better than the worst numbers of his presidency last month which were 44 percent positive and 56 percent negative.
