LIVE 8 Concert Kick Off With Celebrities, Activists and ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History
Activist Training and Rally to Call for
Historic Deal at G8: End Global Aids and Poverty
WHAT: On Saturday, July 2nd, ONE volunteers from across America will
join celebrities and local dignitaries at an activist training
session and press conference/rally to kick-off Philadelphia Live 8
Concert efforts. Speakers will highlight the massive nationwide
grassroots movement calling for 100 percent debt cancellation,
more and better aid and trade justice for the world's poorest
nations.
Following the press conference, millions will gather at LIVE 8
concerts across the globe to put positive pressure on world
leaders in advance of the G8 Africa Summit in Gleneagles, Scotland
on July 6-8th.
Philadelphia is just the first stop for the grassroots leaders,
who represent delegations from all 50 states. They will then
continue their journey on to Gleneagles, sending President Bush to
the G8 on a wave of support for doing more to fight global AIDS
and extreme poverty.
At the G8 Africa Summit, world leaders will meet to discuss the
major social, political and economic conditions that contribute to
poverty. The eight presidents and prime ministers of the G8
nations will be presented with a workable plan for better
international assistance, 100 percent debt cancellation and trade
reform -- and an historic opportunity to end poverty and save
millions of lives.
