The release marks significant innovation in partnership with Socialtext and its enterprise, user and developer communities.
"Socialtext Workspace 1.5 is the only enterprise-ready wiki Appliance solution on the market today," said Socialtext CEO Ross Mayfield. "Wiki's are a simple solution for group productivity, accelerating project cycles by as much as one-quarter by getting teams on the same editable page. Working with our 75 customers, 15 of them Fortune 500s, we have developed the capability to serve real enterprise requirements over the past two years -- but we are not forgetting that users love simple software."
Enterprise Directory Integration
Socialtext 1.5 integrates with Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and Microsoft Active Directory. Developed in collaboration with our enterprise customers, our LDAP/MSAD support will enable our corporate customers to expand to enterprise-wide deployment, using a single login for multiple enterprise applications.
The Socialtext Appliance provides all of the capabilities of the Socialtext Workspace in a hardware appliance designed for minimum administration and maximum security. With low cost on-site deployment afforded by the appliance, Socialtext Workspace now provides a seamless user experience when working with other enterprise applications.
Web Service Integration
Socialtext 1.5 includes an XML integration framework, supporting SOAP, XML-RPC, and REST queries. For customers, Socialtext 1.5 provides a number of new ways to connect a workspace to other dynamic web services, including instant messaging and presence, RSS feeds, searches, and RSS queries.
For users, they gain the advantages of web services without the alphabet soup or the expertise of a cook. Market researchers, for example, can embed a Google query, Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed or Technorati search and have a persistent view of the current results to provide context for on-going analysis.
Social Software Ecosystem Integration
Beyond leveraging web services such as RSS and Technorati, Socialtext 1.5 supports tag links, a new, web-wide mechanism to aggregate tags from weblogs and social software services like Socialtext, Flickr and del.icio.us. Tag links build emergent value out of millions of independent acts of categorization.
Tagging, or Folksonomy represents an alternative and complement to traditional enterprise rigid ontology. When designed to support social incentives for classification, the relative cost and speed benefits are substantial for projects where user adoption and participation is critical.
Open Source and Community Development
The Socialtext 1.5 release continues to build on the thriving Kwiki open source community (http://www.kwiki.org/) and social software developer communities.
The web services and RSS features in this release leveraged code initially developed as plugins for the Kwiki project. As part of the Socialtext 1.5 release cycle the development of the Kwiki plugins, and has released our improvements back to the open source community.
The Technorati tags were developed in collaboration with the innovative social software developer community, which is pioneering ways to scale collaboration from the bottom up.
