GoldenPalace.com Buys Authentic Titanic Artifact for $10,000 From Homeless Man
ST. JOHNS, Antigua, Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- An authentic dinner plate from the doomed ship Titanic has been sold on eBay, through DoorToDoorAuctions.com, for $10,000 USD to GoldenPalace.com, the Internet casino that recently made headlines when it bought the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich and the Ghost Cane from the online auction site.
The seller Jay Sherman, a homeless man with no money or computer skills, inherited the plate from his great aunt Eva, and sold it on eBay through intermediary DoorToDoorAuctions.com, an easy full-service online auction solution that helps sellers use the eBay auction system.
In a scenario right out of a Hollywood movie, Eva Freada Husted was heading back to the United States after she and her husband were visiting England in 1912. The ship she ended up on was none other than the ill-fated Titanic. Marveling at the beauty of the ship, she decided to take a china plate with her as a keepsake and hid it in her coat pocket. On April 15, when the ship was sinking and she was running to the lifeboats, she grabbed her coat and luckily escaped with her life. She later discovered that she escaped with a piece of history as well.
Accompanying the plate is a letter dated February 23, 2004 and signed by Denys Rusatmov, the Marketing Director of the Pirkenhammer Porcelain Company. In that document, he states unequivocally that the plate up for auction was manufactured by Pirkenhammer specifically for the Titanic porcelain plate set in 1911. The plates produced for the Titanic were not sold on the open market. The only place this Blackberry plate could be found by the public was in the 2nd class staterooms of the Titanic.
GoldenPalace.com has become familiar with eBay auctions lately, having recently purchased several items that have since been used to raise over $300,000 for charity including the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich, the Ghost Cane, and the ball that David Beckham kicked over the goal in the Euro 2004 tournament.
"We are very excited by this purchase," said GoldenPalace.com CEO Richard Rowe. "This plate truly is a piece of history, as the sinking of the Titanic is one of the most famous events of the last century. We are also very pleased that the money from this purchase will greatly help Mr. Sherman."
"We are very pleased to have united Mr. Sherman with GoldenPalace.com through eBay," states Scott Hunter, DoorToDoorAuctions.com. "Hopefully, Mr. Sherman will be able to replace rags with these riches and get a new start on life."
