Avamar Partners With Plasmon to Extend Optical Archival Capabilities to Its Unique Disk-Based Backup Solution

Avamar Partners With Plasmon to Extend Optical Archival Capabilities to Its Unique Disk-Based Backup Solution

Joint Solution Provides Cost-Effective Online Access to Data and Long-Term Optical Archiving

IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Avamar Technologies, Inc. a leading provider of innovative data protection solutions, and Plasmon , the leader in professional archival storage solutions, have announced a certified, joint solution that provides comprehensive protection for data from disk-based backup and restore to long-term archiving. The joint solution combines Avamar Axion's highly efficient backup to hard disk storage with Plasmon's UDO (Ultra Density Optical) technology for reliable archiving on optical media.

The joint Axion and UDO solution allows customers to backup their data to Axion and then replicate data directly from Axion to the Plasmon G-series library for offsite disaster recovery and long-term archiving. As a result, replication to the optical archives is done without any impact to primary customer servers. "Enterprises have traditionally used tape media for backup due to its high sequential throughput and low cost per gigabyte," said Christopher Harris, President of Plasmon. "With this joint solution, however, enterprises can now back up to disk and use UDO media, with its higher data authenticity and media longevity, in place of tape media for offsite replication and long-term archiving."

Avamar Axion provides cost-effective backup to disk by eliminating redundant data within files, across systems and across time using its patented sub-file analysis called commonality factoring. As a result, daily backups are reduced by 99%, and overall storage requirements for backup are reduced by 90%. More importantly, Avamar's efficiency makes backing up to disk storage better, cheaper and faster, and eliminates the need for tape media and libraries.

"Partnering with Plasmon lets us provide customers with the simplest, most cost-effective solution for life cycle data management," said Kevin Daly, CEO of Avamar. "Today, IT managers struggle with the numerous complex layers of managing their data life cycles. A single environment might include moving storage from online, primary storage arrays to near-line arrays, staging backups to a disk buffer for faster restores, backing up to a tape library and then archiving to optical media. Axion cuts through all the complexity, enabling low cost and permanent storage of data archives on a single tier of hard disk storage, which can then be transferred to Plasmon UDO libraries for long-term and offsite archiving."

Plasmon UDO technology has been well received by the marketplace since its launch over a year ago, with over 2 petabytes in shipments of the Plasmon G-series libraries powered by UDO. The new technology features blue lasers for recording rather than the red lasers used in previous optical drives such as MO and DVD. With the blue laser recording, UDO achieves far greater data densities, resulting in more cost-effective media with higher storage capacities. With true "write once" authenticity and a media life of 50+ years, UDO meets the most stringent regulatory requirements for long-term storage in any industry.

Avamar and Plasmon will bring their joint solution to market through shared resellers.
